How to be a Team Player

Think TEAM

Fundamental mindset shift is from ‘me’ to ‘we’. It’s not about me, it’s about us. Together Everyone Achieves More. This is not a cliché. It’s synergy. The sum of the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Support a decision

Decision making is tough. Leaders don’t always get it right. As soon as they know they haven’t got it right, they need to decide again. Don’t moan about the change, get on and make the new decision work.

Anticipate the need

If you’ve been around the block a few times, you’ll know what is likely to be needed in a situation. You know that you’ll be asked for some information, or to take some action. Get it done before you’re asked.

Offer to assist

Shift the focus from yourself to others. What do they need? Don’t wait to be asked for help. If you see something they might need help with, step in and offer to assist.

Encourage others

Each of us could use a little encouragement from time to time. Be that person that offers it, rather than the one who is moaning, or cracking a sad.

Empathise with the leader

If you have ever been promoted from amongst your peers, you’ll know how difficult it is to lead, and to have them follow. Leadership is a two edged sword – get it right and you shine, get it wrong and they whine. Knowing its tough, don’t make the leader’s job more difficult than it has to be. Believe me, we remember who helped and who hindered.

Be organised

Get your shit together, turn up five minutes before the five minutes before. Be ready. Have what you need with you. A little bit of prep will make all the difference to your confidence and you’ll win the respect of your fellow team members.

Don’t wait for others to motivate you

Self-starting, self-motivated people are a joy to have in a team. They don’t drain you of energy, and you might even have some of their enthusiasm rub off on you. Be that person.

Share information

When you know something, or have learned something pertinent to the job you are doing, share it. Don’t gossip, make sure its solid, useful and not confidential, and then share it. No-one likes to be kept in the dark.

Ask ‘what else?’

When you’ve done your job, ask what else? What else would you like me to do? Anyone need a hand?

Pull your weight

Do your job to the best of your ability, and at a bare minimum, do what is expected of you. The standout team members do extra. They are the ones that get ahead, they are the ones you remember, they are the ones you want to be like.
