Is business coaching right for me?
Business coaching is ideal for someone wanting to speed up the process of growing a business, by making better decisions, and by focussing their time on the right activities. Knowing which strategy will work best, which business model suits, and which structure will support the business’s growth all contribute to a less stressful, more rewarding experience.

Listen to a recent interview I gave to The Perth Business Podcast:

I came to business coaching as a client of a coach, and was firstly amazed that such a person existed, and secondly, by how quickly I learned what I needed to know to succeed. This was due to my coach having the ability to size up what was happening, and to know which piece of the puzzle needed sorting out first. My business doubled in the first 12 months thanks to his coaching, and I knew then that I wanted to do what he was doing for a living. Having been a client of a coach, I know what its like to invest in myself, to get on a steep learning curve, and to be open to change.

It took me a few years to get trained up as a business coach, and a few more stumbling through my first few clients with my trainer wheels on. Now, 20 years later, I have watched my clients grow, expand, go international, and even list on the stock exchange. I have been there at some of the most critical moments of their journey, in the middle of some their most difficult decisions, when they have been most vulnerable, and there when success and good fortune shined.

I have commiserated with them, supported them, laughed with them, and celebrated with them. Many have become my friends, and I keep in touch with most as often as possible.

I am privileged to do what I do, to be successful at it, and to watch my clients realise their potential.

I often say that some people have a high threshold for pain. They would rather struggle through on their own, taking longer, costing more, making mistake after mistake, than seek help. A good coach can be an enormous relief; someone to call to ask a question, to get some advice, to let off some steam and to help us stay on track. We need to enjoy each day as best as we can, which, of course, is up to each of us.’

So what does the journey look like?

We typically engage for an initial 12 month period, because while we are good at what we do, it takes time to ‘turn the ship around’. At 12 months, we review the progress, review the strategy, reset the goals, and more often than not, set off again. Now that the client-coach relationship is bearing fruit, we keep the winning team together and drive more depth – knowledge, understanding, skills, so that the business owner develops, and then the senior staff.

The Best Investment You'll Ever Make

A well-run small business is likely the best investment a person will ever make. It will pay for every other investment (good or bad) they make, pay the mortgage, pay the school fees, pay for the holidays, the weddings and fund retirement, whatever that looks like. Its often the investment that my clients understand the best, can influence, can control, and can apply knowledge to reduce risk. It very often pays the best returns, and a dollar invested in the business tends to generate more than a dollar invested elsewhere.
